The Older Brother and his girlfriend visited for the holiday weekend. An ex-patriot friend was in town, camping with his family, and they wanted to hang out with him a bit while they had the chance. They got to go hiking, spend time at the beach, and play a bunch of video games, because that’s usually what The Older Brother wants to do when he hangs out with TG.

This has never been a problem for us. It might be a bit of a hassle to drag the Rock Band equipment upstairs and hook up the 360, but it’s cool. It gives people something to do, and if The Older Brother isn’t entertained, he can get very obnoxious, very quickly. It’s part of his charm.

The first time he and the girlfriend visited, we played Wii Sports. You know, the game everyone young and old alike can play. Anyone can emulate bowling or tennis, so it’s always an immediate hit and a go-to party game. Apparently, we’d never met someone like this new girlfriend. The Older Brother wanted to start a Tennis match, so we set it up for doubles, and away we went. The girlfriend was doing okay until her turn to serve. Things started going downhill more quickly when we switched to the ever-popular Bowling, and even worse with the Golf. She had adapted this only backswing swing, and when we tried to have her pretend like she was really golfing, we were just ignored. Apparently, she liked swinging from front to back.

Over this visit, The Older Brother requested a Rock Band extravaganza, so we got the microphone, two guitars, and the drums all set up. The girlfriend was going to sing, with The Older Brother on drums, and TG rocking the guitar. I took my usual position as Facilitator (also known as She Who Pushes the Buttons For New Players to Make Sure They are on Easy difficulty). After the first song or two, instruments were switched and the girlfriend was on bass. As Facilitator, I take it as my job to remind The Older Brother of things like Overdrive and newer players about things like “those weird white notes” and the kick pedal on the drums. So, I watched the girlfriend’s progress, and she seemed to be missing every note. I took the opportunity to remind her to strum, feeling a little weird and embarrassed about it, because of course she knew to strum. But, it turned out fine, because she indeed was not strumming. And, throughout the weekend she forgot to strum each time she picked up the guitar again.

I get that some people just aren’t the gamer type. I’ve got no problem with that. It can even be charming to watch someone who’s flailing but trying. The weird thing is trying to relate to this new person in our lives. She’s quite a bit older than even The Older Brother, and a full 13 years beyond my own age.

TG and I have very few interests outside of gaming and awful TV or movies. The Older Brother and the girlfriend are more interested in filmmaking, fashion, and artsy movies. They mostly seem to like drinking, and TG and I abstain.

I feel a bit bad for saying I’m not fond of her after only a few meetings, but it’s really not all about the inability to game. Is it our age difference? Are we just not meant to bond, because she was a teenager when I was just a newborn? I hate to say it, but I miss The Older Brother’s Ex-Wife.

About Amanda

Amanda is a 20-something flailing gamer. While she loves MMORPGs, the company in them often triggers flare-ups of her social anxiety. Her all-time favorite games include Everquest Online Adventures, Eternal Sonata, the Animal Crossing series, Katamari Damacy, and Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure. She lives on junk food, and her favorite books are equally trashy. She doesn't believe in putting two spaces after a period, but she does strongly believe in the serial comma. Unfortunately, she has a penchant for starting sentences with "and" and "but;" hopefully you won't hold that, or her excessive use of semicolons, against her.
